FAQs & Fees
Why consult a psychologist?
Psychologists apply their expertise using reliable and scientifically supported methods. Research shows that psychological treatments are effective in managing many common mental health disorders. Around one in five Australians develop common disorders and can often be assisted by psychological approaches which are based on changing thoughts, behaviours and emotions. Psychologists follow guidelines about professional conduct, responsibilities and confidentiality that are set and monitored by the Psychology Board of Australia, ensuring that you receive expert psychological services of the highest standard.
What happens when you see a psychologist?
During your first appointment you will be encouraged to explain your concerns and you will be asked relevant questions about yourself. Your psychologist will work to understand your concerns by exploring thoughts, emotions and behaviour, asking about the background of the problem, and asking you to fill out questionnaires where appropriate. In subsequent appointments, you will work with the psychologist on strategies to improve problem areas. The number and frequency of future appointments will be discussed with you.
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
Individuals do not need a referral to see a psychologist.
Are there rebates available for seeing a psychologist?
Depending on the circumstances of your referral you may be eligible to receive a rebate from Medicare.
For this to apply clients must be referred by their GP in the context of a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, or by their psychiatrist or paediatrician.
Most private health funds pay rebates for psychological services, provided that you have extras cover.
